I visited Lil Smoky's Drive-In for a late lunch on a quick day trip up to Burnsville. As I've noted in other reviews, I'm working on getting a hot dog in every county in North Carolina and this was my Yancy County Dog (county number 99!). The lunch rush was wrapping up as I pulled into the parking lot. Main tables were still full but were clearing out. When I walked in, I wasn't totally sure if it was an order at the counter or seat yourself type place. For those reading this after, you can just seat yourself and a server will bring a menu by. The locals that came after me got a much warmer welcome than I did, but it was great to see that this community is tight-knit. I ordered a hot dog with chili, mustard, and slaw and a bacon cheeseburger. Everything came out pretty quickly. The hot dog had a nice chewy bun but the chili had a flavor to it that I didn't love. Maybe a spice, cinnamon? I not sure but it wasn't my favorite. The burger on the other hand was really good. I think it's simplicity is what makes it delicious plus a really nice serving of bacon. :) I got a slice of peanut butter cake to go. You know when you see 7 tupperware cake carriers on top of a counter that the desserts are going to be homemade and delicious. and it was! All in all, a nice stop. Thanks Lil Smoky's!

This is the quintessential local place. Everyone knew everyone else, and though I was the newbie, I felt as welcomed as anyone else there. I wanted a diner breakfast, and I was not disappointed. Within seconds of sitting down, I had a cup of freshly made coffee, and I sat listening to the local town gossip as I waited to give my order. Pancakes and bacon, both of which were better than you will get at a chain, and better priced. The flapjacks were fluffy and plate sized; the bacon was crisp and flavorful. There isn't a ton of seating, so try to hit this place during non-peak hours. I went on a Saturday around 8:30 AM, and it was 2/3 full. Decor is greasy spoon, so if you are wanting ambiance, you've come to the wrong establishment. If being among local, blue-collar workers is your cup of joe, this is where you want to find yourself. I'm told the burgers are something special, so I will be making a return visit.

I got the mountain burger and it was so good! Really good burger. I didn't like the chili but that's my preference! Service was great! It was a little slow today but it's okay! Inside reminded me of an old time restaurant which was nice! Will be back!

Excellent food, slow paced atmosphere. If not in a hurry , dine and enjoy conscientious pricing on American style favorites like their burgers. Wait staff gets a little behind with plenty of customers to serve otherwise excellent.
